Prototype IX

Another fine turn out for Bristol's biggest scratch night- Prototype, held in the Tobacco Factory Theatre.

In my usual style here are my thoughts on it:

Little Lupin Gets a Big Review

Imagine the nerves when, on just the second show at the Bristol Old Vic, Lyn Gardner turns up at my ticket booth. I'm very pleased to say that despite one of the performers being unable to walk due to injury and having had to rework 90% of the show in just one week we got ourselves a rather fetching 3 star review which appeared not only online but in the printed paper too.

What is more she described me as having 'the camp enthusiasm of a fanged Bruce Forsyth.'

What to see this week? Litttle Lupin!

The Tragic and Disturbing Tale of Little Lupin is mentioned over at What to see: Lyn Gardner's theatre tips.

We've been working on it all week and it's a really good show, book yourself a ticket asap at the top link - only 12 per show!

The Milk Bar

Amazing news! Residence has a new home, thanks to the wonderful people in the Arts and Property departments of Bristol City Council we are now the proud residents of The Milk Bar, 11 St Nicholas Street, Bristol, BS1 1UE.

We have the space for six months and will be making the most of it right from the get go. We are sharing the building with Simon Games who if you don't know are the folks behind the amazing igfest(.org) a festival of pervasive games.

The Middle Bit in LONDON

FOR ONE NIGHT ONLY!

At the Tristan Bates Theatre

Where exactly is it Ed?

Following sell-out success in this year’s Bristol Mayfest Ed Rapley’s The Middle Bit is making it's way to London this December…

“Have you ever felt like you just can’t be bothered?”

In this funny and thoughtful show notorious Bristol performer Ed Rapley attempts to overcome his own lazy demons...and fails.

The Ever Present Fear of Death Whilst Cycling

Recently I have been cycling more than usual. This is because I have effectively had a job for the best part of a month now. First rehearsing The Tragic and Disturbing Tale of Little Lupin and then working on a Drupal site for the lovely guys at thoughtden.co.uk

The Director

A little while back I was thinking about the role of the director and the different way in which people deploy this role. On my own shows I work with Holly Stoppit, she comes from a circus and street theatre background, this brings pragmatism and a concern for the experience of the audience that is so useful in preventing a practice like mine, which involves introspection, self reference, and general oddness, from disappearing up it's own arse.

Black Dogs & Burning Desire

It's been quite a summer, for most of it I have been accompanied by the black dog of depression. It came about after finishing my show 'The Middle Bit' for the Bristol Mayfest. It's a show that explores misery and self destruction (in my own mild mannered mode at least, no rock and roll here, just introspection) and as I say in the show I had hoped that the process of making it would help. Hmmm, well it didn't and that really got me down. Oh the irony.

Indie by Numbers

I have just watch a film i really hated. It was indie by numbers. It was formulaic to the point of insult. It was bereft of true feeling in it's inception and execution. It was god awful.

Sunshine Cleaners - From the *producers* who brought you Little Miss Sunshine.

Right there, that's it the whole reason why this is an awful film, it's not the Director, Writer, or any other member of the creative team bringing you this film, it's the PRODUCERS.

That means it's the sweaty-palmed money-men thinking:

"If we touch their hearts, they'll give us money."

  • @andytfield is this what you mean? For me context is the world around and outside the work: its time & place.
  • @andytfield Yes critics should be looking at the work's meaning & the artist's intent rather than just the machinery which carries it.
